Marco Aurelio de Paoli

President of ABPol

Graduated (Bachelor’s Degree) in Chemistry from the University of Brasília (1970) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of São Paulo (1974). He did postdoctoral studies at the Max-Planck Institute and at the University of Frankfurt, with a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, from July 1975 to May 1977. He began his career as a professor at Unicamp in May 1977, having passed a competition for Professor Titular in 1990. He retired in 2004, remaining at Unicamp as a Voluntary Collaborating Professor until July 2014 and later as a Collaborating Researcher.

Until 2014 he taught a large number of disciplines at undergraduate and graduate level and was responsible for introducing many new experiments into laboratory courses. He created the first Experimental Inorganic Chemistry course for Chemical Engineering students and taught it for many semesters. He also taught specialization courses for professionals in the plastics and rubber industries.

He has worked as a visiting professor or researcher at the following institutions: IBM Research Center (California, USA), Universitá di Roma La Sapienza (Rome, Italy), Université Libre de Bruxelles (Brussels, Belgium), Universitá di Bologna (Bologna, Italy), Hahn -Meitner Institut (Berlin, Germany), Universidad de Sonora (Ermosillo, Mexico), Universidad de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Universidad de Concepción (Concepcion, Chile).
He has published over 270 scientific papers (more than 10,000 citations, h factor = 50), 10 book chapters, has written three books and is co-author of 8 national and 1 international patents. He has given several plenary lectures and key-note lectures at national and international congresses.

He has supervised 40 Master’s Dissertations and 35 Doctoral Theses, in addition to having supervised a large number of Scientific Initiation students and supervised 8 postdoctoral interns. All of his former employees are now professionally active, whether in the academic sector or in the industrial sector.

He was President of the Sociedade Brasileira de Química, member of the Board of Directors of the Associação Brasileira de Polímeros and is currently its President. He acts as an arbitrator in a large number of national and international scientific journals and is on the Editorial Board of the magazine Polímeros: Ciência e Tecnologia. He received several awards: Union Carbide Chemistry Incentive Award, Zeferino Vaz Academic Recognition Scholarship, 3M Nontenured Faculty Award, Elsevier’s Scopus Brasil 2008 Award, SBQ’s Simão Mathias Medal in 2009, Profa. Eloisa Mano-ABPol 2009, Mercosul Science and Technology Award 2011 and Unicamp Inventors Award on four occasions. He is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, has received the Commendation and the Grand Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit.

Throughout his career, he has always interacted with the Brazilian industrial sector, developing several projects and products in partnership with companies and with the participation of scientific initiation or graduate students. He also interacted with a Japanese company (Daiso Co. Ltd., Osaka) in the development of a product that was used in parallel in his research.

He has extensive experience in Chemistry, with an emphasis on Polymers and Electrochemistry, working mainly on the following topics: degradation and stabilization of polymers, formulation of thermoplastics, conductive polymers and polymer blends. Since the beginning of his career, he has worked on research projects in interaction with the industrial sector. Current research interest is focused on “Polymeric Composite Materials of Low Environmental Impact”.
